Well here is my first ever battle report.  I have wanted to do a battle report for many years and it is nice to finally get something underway.  Even though all of the minis aren’t painted it is still good to get something started.  I was also able to guilt Gerry into playing with a fully painted army next time.  🙂

We started by setting up the terrain and then selecting a mission from the Battle Missions book.  We selected the Chaos Space Marine mission Pillage.  Basically the mission is that at the end of your opponents shooting phase you collect salvage points for each unit in contact with an objective.    We chose table quarters and then put down the 4 objectives.

Battle Report

alright after all that nonsense we can finally get on with the battle report.

Deployment

Gerry deploys Kharn in his own personal limousine and a squad of berserkers in a rhino.  Both transports are sitting on an objective.  Everything else is in reserve.

Playing daemons I was forced to hold everything in reserve.

Turn 1

Gerry inches all of his stuff forward making sure to hold on to his objectives.

battlefield

The daemons deep strike all over the board.  The nurglings and plaguebearer’s land close to their objective.  The greater daemon lands right in the middle of the square and the daemon prince land just a little off target.  A challenge is issued between the players and the greater daemon gets ready for a showdown with Kharn.

Turn 2

A rhino comes in from reserve and heads over towards the nurglings and their objective.  Kharn disembarks and advances towards the greater daemon looking for a fight.  The greater daemon ignores all shots during the shooting phase but rolls poorly for saves during the assault phase and takes 3 wounds.  With his attacks back he decides to roll 4 1’s and (obviously) misses with every attack.  He promptly suffers two fearless wounds and dies.

Reserves look hopeful for the Hemorrhagic Fever.  My backup greater daemon and a whole squad of plaguebearers fall out of the sky.  The plaguebearers aim to hang onto one of Gerry’s objectives for a turn or two but deepstrike too far away.  The daemon prince moves behind the landraider to take a swing at it but he is too weak to penetrate the armor.  He is at least sitting on an objective and can hopefully score an objective point on the next turn.

Turn 3

Gerry gets empties out his reserves and moves a landraider full of a chaos lord and a squad of berserkers behind the daemon prince threatening his other landraider.  The squad that was hunkering down in the rhino jumps out and shoots down two plaguebearers.  The last squad of berserkers jumps out of their rhino and attempts to run to the objective.  Kharn eyes up the second great unclean one.  It is not a good turn for Nurgle.  The squad in the landraider easily kill the daemon prince.  The squad that was sitting in the rhino eliminates all but one of the plaguebearers.  At least the great unclean one holds his own weight and suffers a single wound and takes all of Kharn’s.

khorne Berserkers

battlefield

The single squad of plaguebearers in reserve stays in reserve.   The greater daemon torches and then assaults the berserkers and kills all but one of them.  He takes a few fearless saves and dies anyways.  The lone plaguebearer near the World Eater’s objectives is slain.

Turn 4

The World Eaters mount up and get ready to assault next turn.

Where are those plaguebearers?  Didn’t they get the memo?  The Daemons don’t have many options — brace for impact.

78

Turn 5

The World Eaters take down the great unclean one with ease and slay a few nurgling bases as well.

battlefield

The plaguebearers show up and scatter off of the objective.

Turn 6

This turn is only played to finish out the game.  The nurglings are destroyed and a wall of vehicles prevents the plaguebearers from getting to the objective.

Conclusion

Victory to Khorne.  I have to admit the final score was closer than it seemed.  If I could have had one or two units that had better deep strike rolls I might have been able to tie the game.  I think the first great unclean one had some bad luck and should have been a serious nuisance for the opponent; not a free snack along the way.

Despite of few unlucky die rolls Gerry used good tactics.  He used his long range guns and empty transports to hold the objectives.  He was also smart enough to let me come to him, crush each element of my force individually, and then go after my objectives.  He might not have had an abundance of objective points but he certainly had much more of his army left after the fight.

There was also some poor tactics on my part.  One example that sticks out was when I deep struck the nurglings rather than the plaguebearers on the objective closer to the enemy.  Doh.  I also think I could have had a better list.  A small squad of 7 plaguebearers sitting in the backfield would have been great for this mission.  I will have to remember to take those squads more often.  I also think that I load my monstrous creatures up with too many pieces of flare.  I am not sold on the Breath of Chaos on the great unclean ones.

Also my minis weren’t painted.  They would certainly roll better if they were painted.  🙂

Any thoughts?  Please share them.  🙂
